Brushing technique
Brushing technique is how you move a toothbrush to clean all tooth surfaces. The ADA advises a soft brush, two minutes, twice a day, at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
Good brushing is about method as well as time. The ADA recommends brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. Place the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Move it gently back and forth in short, tooth-wide strokes. Clean the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces. To reach the inside of the front teeth, tilt the brush upright and make several up-and-down strokes.
Brush hard enough to clean the film off your teeth, but do not scrub. Firm bristles or hard scrubbing may damage gums and enamel. Replace your brush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles fray.
Brushing does not reach between teeth, so also clean there once a day with floss or an interdental brush. Use fluoride toothpaste. See teeth cleaning.
