Fluoride toothpaste
Fluoride toothpaste contains fluoride, a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps fight tooth decay. The ADA recommends brushing with it twice a day.
Fluoride toothpaste is toothpaste with added fluoride. The ADA says fluoride strengthens teeth to help prevent tooth decay and helps remineralize tooth enamel in the early stages of decay. Not all toothpastes contain fluoride, so check the label for the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
The ADA recommends brushing twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste. Use only a small amount as your dentist advises, and be sure children do not swallow it. Some toothpastes add ingredients for sensitive teeth or whitening, but the fluoride is what helps protect enamel.
Fluoride is also found in some community water. See community water fluoridation and brushing technique. Ask about fluoride treatment if you are at higher risk for cavities.
