Materials
Titanium
Titanium is a strong, light metal that the body tolerates well, used to make the posts of most dental implants and some other dental parts.
Titanium has a useful trait for dentistry. Bone can grow tightly against its surface, which is the process called osseointegration. That is why it is the usual choice for the post of a dental implant. The ADA says dental implants are made up of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. Titanium is also used for implant parts that connect the post to the tooth, such as an abutment. It does not rust. A few people report metal sensitivity, so tell your dentist about any metal allergies before treatment. Your dentist will talk with you about materials and what to expect. See our dental implant page.
