Gum Care
Periodontist
A periodontist is a dentist with extra training in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease and in placing dental implants.
A periodontist is a dentist who has completed added training in gum care after dental school. The ADA says periodontists receive three additional years of education beyond dental school. Their work centers on the inflammatory disease that destroys the gums and other supporting structures around the teeth. People are often referred to a periodontist for advanced gum disease, for gum surgery such as a gum graft, or for implant placement. Your own dentist checks your gums at every exam and can tell you if a referral is needed. Tell your dentist if your gums bleed, swell, or pull back, or if a tooth feels loose. See periodontitis and our page on periodontal care.
