Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning)
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gumline. It is used to treat gum disease by removing tartar and bacteria from the tooth roots.
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gumline that is used to treat gum disease. Gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. If the pockets between your gums and teeth are too deep, scaling and root planing may be needed.
Scaling removes plaque and tartar from the teeth, both above and below the gums. Root planing smooths the tooth roots. Cleveland Clinic says your dentist or hygienist gives local anesthesia to numb your gums first. It is a nonsurgical treatment.
A July 2015 study in the Journal of the American Dental Association found it beneficial to patients with chronic periodontitis. See periodontitis and periodontal maintenance. Our office describes gum care on its periodontal care page.
