Periodontal charting
Periodontal charting is the written record of gum measurements taken around each tooth, including pocket depths, bleeding, and loose teeth.
A periodontal chart is a map of your gum health. The hygienist or dentist uses a probe to measure the gum space around each tooth and calls out the numbers, which are recorded on the chart. The chart also notes bleeding, gum recession, and tooth movement. A paper in the NIH library says the gum exam includes assessment of probing depths, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, furcations, mobility, and recessions. Comparing charts over time shows whether the gums are staying steady or changing. The numbers help the dentist plan care, such as a deep cleaning.
