Periodontal maintenance
Periodontal maintenance is ongoing care after gum disease treatment. It is done at regular visits to keep the gums stable.
Periodontal maintenance is a procedure performed following periodontal therapy. According to the ADA, it continues for the life of the dentition. The goal is to keep gum disease under control after active treatment.
The American Academy of Periodontology says the majority of patients will need ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain periodontal health after scaling and root planing.
The schedule is set by your dental team and based on your needs. Some insurance plans limit benefits for this procedure, so ask your plan how it is covered. See scaling and root planing and periodontal pockets. Our office describes gum care on its periodontal care page.
