Dentures and Bridges

Overdenture

An overdenture is a removable denture that fits over and attaches to dental implants or to prepared natural tooth roots for extra stability.

A regular denture rests only on the gums and can move. An overdenture adds anchors. These anchors can be dental implants or the roots of a few natural teeth. The denture has fittings on the underside that click onto them. Cleveland Clinic says that instead of relying on the jawbone ridge and gums for support, implant-retained dentures attach to dental implants. You take it out to clean it, and you keep the anchors clean as well. An overdenture can give better hold than a standard lower denture. It still needs care, and the fittings may wear and need to be replaced. Your dentist will talk with you about whether it fits your bone and goals. See implant-supported denture and our dentures page.
