Emergency

Luxated tooth

A luxated tooth is a tooth that has been pushed out of its normal position by injury but is not fully knocked out. It may be loose, tilted, pushed in or pushed out.

Tooth luxation, also called tooth dislocation, happens when the tissues, ligaments and bones that support a tooth are damaged. Dental trauma and infection can cause it. The tooth may be loose, moved to a new angle, pushed deeper into the socket, or pushed partly out.

Cleveland Clinic says luxation can seriously affect your ability to eat and speak, and it can let bacteria reach the area around the tooth. Treatment options can stabilize the tooth and keep the pulp healthy. A dentist may reposition the tooth and hold it in place with a splint.

See your dentist as soon as possible after an injury. A partly dislodged tooth is a dental emergency. See teeth splinting, avulsed tooth, and emergency dentistry.
