Interproximal reduction (IPR)

Interproximal reduction, or IPR, is the removal of a very thin layer of enamel between teeth to make a small amount of room.

Crowding can leave no space to move teeth. IPR creates a little. The dentist uses a fine strip or disc to smooth the sides of certain teeth. Cleveland Clinic says IPR is a common dental procedure to remove small amounts of enamel between your teeth, and that it may be used to create more space before braces or clear aligners. It is done in the chair, usually without numbing. It is planned, measured, and kept within a small amount per tooth, because enamel does not grow back. Possible downsides include tooth sensitivity. After IPR, the dentist polishes the area. Your dentist will talk with you about whether it fits. See crowded teeth and clear aligners, or our page on teeth straightening.
