Temporary crown
A temporary crown is a short-term cap, often made of resin or acrylic, that covers a prepared tooth while the final crown is made.
After the dentist shapes a tooth for a crown, a lab often needs time to make the final one. A temporary crown covers the tooth in the meantime. It protects the tooth, helps you chew and speak, and keeps the teeth beside it from drifting. Cleveland Clinic says temporary crowns are usually made of resin or acrylic. The dentist holds it on with a weak dental cement, so it can come off more easily than the final crown. Avoid sticky or hard foods, and floss with care. Call the office if it comes off, because the tooth underneath is exposed. See dental crown, acrylic, and our dental crown page.
