Dental crown

A dental crown is a cap that fits over a whole tooth. It restores a tooth's shape and strength and protects it.

A dental crown is sometimes called a cap. It fits over your entire tooth. To place a crown, your dentist must remove some of your natural tooth enamel. They shape the tooth, then place the crown over it.

According to the ADA, a crown can make a tooth stronger and improve its appearance. It can help strengthen a tooth with a large filling when there is not enough tooth left to hold the filling. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that is already broken.

Crowns can be made from different materials, such as porcelain or metal. See porcelain and temporary crown. Not to be confused with the anatomical crown, the part of the tooth you see. Our office describes crowns on its dental crown page.
