Diastema (tooth gap)
A diastema is a gap between two teeth. Gaps can occur anywhere in the mouth, but they are most common between the two upper front teeth.
Diastema refers to a gap between your teeth. Gaps can occur anywhere in your mouth, but they are most common between your two front teeth. A gap is often harmless and may be only a matter of looks.
Many people are prone to a gap because of their genes. Causes include missing teeth, teeth that are too small and an oversized frenum. A gap can also form from clenching or from pressing the tongue against the front teeth. If gum disease caused the gap, you may notice pain, redness or swelling.
Diastema treatments include dental bonding, porcelain veneers and braces. Which one fits depends on the cause and what you want. A dentist can look at the gap and talk with you about your options. Our office describes dental bonding on its own page. See also dental veneers.
