Chlorhexidine rinse
A chlorhexidine rinse is a prescription mouthwash that kills germs and is used for a short time to treat gum inflammation.
Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic. Dentists may prescribe it as a mouth rinse after gum treatment, gum surgery, or when gingivitis needs extra help. MedlinePlus says chlorhexidine is used to treat gingivitis, which is redness and swelling of the gums. You swish it for about 30 seconds, then spit, as directed on the label. It does not replace brushing and cleaning between teeth. Possible side effects include stain on teeth and fillings, changes in taste, and more tartar. Your dentist will tell you how long to use it. Do not swallow it. Ask your dentist or pharmacist if you have questions. See mouthwash, gum inflammation, and our periodontal care page.
