What is Dental Lifeline Network’s program in Missouri?
Dental Lifeline Network runs a program called Donated Dental Services (DDS) in Missouri. Its Missouri page says “volunteers provide comprehensive treatment to eligible patients.” The page lists volunteer dentists and volunteer laboratories, and it says patients have been treated in Missouri since 1999. This post uses only that page, as of October 2026.
Our website shows a badge that reads “Volunteer Dental Lifeline Network.” This post says nothing more about our office’s role in the program.
Who can apply?
The page says “applicants must have no means to afford dental care and must meet ONE of the following criteria.” Here is the list, with what the page says in each row.
| Criterion on the Missouri page | What it means in plain words |
|---|---|
| Over 65 years of age | You are older than 65 |
| Permanently disabled | The page uses this wording; ask the program how it applies to you |
| Need medically necessary dental care | A dental problem calls for treatment for your health |
The page adds a special case: if you have documentation from a physician that says you cannot receive essential medical treatment because of your dental condition, you can apply even if your county is closed. It also says veterans who meet the qualifications may still apply when their county is closed.
What does the program not cover?
Two limits matter. The page says “volunteers do not provide emergency services” and “volunteers do not provide cosmetic treatment.” If you have a dental emergency, do not wait for this program. Read our dental emergency guide, and call a dentist or go to an emergency room. Our office is closed Friday to Sunday.
Is St. Louis County open for applications?
As of October 2026, yes. The page says “we are ONLY accepting applications in the following counties,” and the list includes St. Louis and St. Louis City, along with many other Missouri counties. If your county is not listed, the page says the program cannot accept your application at this time. The list can change, so check the page before you apply.
How do I apply or get help?
The page offers an online application, a mail-in application download and an upload tool for added documents. It lists a Missouri program contact phone number: 573.636.4440. Gather your papers first. Proof of your reason for applying may be part of the process, such as your age, a disability or a physician’s note. Ask the program exactly which documents it needs.
What should I ask before I apply?
Treat the application as a first step, not a promise of care. The page does not say how long the process takes, and we cannot say either. Ask the program these questions:
- Is my county open today, and how will you tell me if it closes?
- Which of the three criteria fits my situation, and what proof do you need?
- What happens after I apply, and who calls me?
- If a volunteer dentist treats me, which services are included?
- What should I do if I develop pain while I wait?
Write down the answers and the date. If you are helping a parent or a neighbor, ask whether you can sit in on the call. If you need care before the program can help, a dental office can give you a written estimate for the work. See the next section for other places to ask.
How does this compare with other help?
Donated care is one option among several. MO HealthNet covers adult dental care in a limited way, as our post on MO HealthNet and adult dental care explains. Our post on low-cost dental care in St. Louis County lists school clinics and other programs. Seniors can also read dental care for seniors in St. Louis County.
For general terms, see the glossary entries on dental insurance and on treatment plans. A written treatment plan can help a program understand what care you need.
