# Dental Veneers

Veneers are thin coverings, usually porcelain or composite resin, placed on the front of teeth to change their color, shape or spacing. Some enamel is removed, so the American Dental Association says treatment is not reversible. Your dentist first treats any decay or gum problems.

## Two main types

The American Dental Association says the two main types are porcelain and composite, and each has benefits.

## Not reversible

Tooth enamel is removed to place a veneer, so treatment cannot be undone.

## Health first

Decay or gum disease must be treated first, because veneers on unhealthy teeth may worsen problems.

## Grinding is a concern

The association says veneers may not be a good choice if you clench or grind.

For patients who have chipped, stained, or unevenly spaced front teeth, veneers are an option that our team at Town Center Dental offers to help you achieve a brighter smile. Veneers are shells attached to the front of broken teeth in order to approve their appearance. Veneers can improve a tooth’s color, shape, size, and length. Some people only get one veneer in the case of a broken or chipped tooth. Most often veneers cover six to eight teeth in order to achieve a more symmetrical and even smile.

## What Are Veneers Made Of?

Veneers are thin facings that dentists can attach to the tooth which serves as the base. Dental veneers are most commonly made of porcelain or composite resin. Depending on the material used the treatment will differ. No prep veneers like Lumineers and Vivaneers are less invasive and take less time to apply. The specific brands do not require the removal of enamel to be applied. Porcelain veneers can encase your teeth without extensive and invasive dental procedures.

## What To Expect

Applying dental veneers requires removing the tooth structure so that the veneer may replace it. Composite resin veneers require the dentist to etch the surface of your tooth before applying a layer of the composite resin thinly. Additional layers can be added to achieve your desired smile. To finish, your dentist will cure the composite resin material with an ultraviolet light. For other porcelain veneers, significant amounts of tooth structure must be removed.

In order to properly place your veneers, the dentist will have to grind down the structure past the enamel. For this reason, the dentist will use local anesthetics. This way you can be sure that the only discomfort you will feel is the slight pinch of a needle injecting anesthetics. The amount of tooth structure reduced will depend on your individual dental concerns and the number of teeth involved. Next, the dentist will create a mold that will be sent to a dental lab. Once the veneer is ready we can cement your new smile into place.

## What Are The Benefits?

In relatively no time, veneers can completely transform your smile. If you have multiple teeth requiring treatment, veneers could be the best option for you. If you suffer from severe tooth decay, veneers can serve as a protective barrier from bacteria. If your teeth have stains, veneers are highly resistant to staining from coffee, tea, or smoking. Your new teeth will be brighter, so teeth whitening will no longer be a concern. Veneers can allow anyone to have the smile they have always wanted.

## Aftercare

Porcelain veneers are very durable and can last 10 to 15 years given the proper care. This means to be careful with certain foods, wear a nightguard or athletic guard, when necessary, avoid bad habits concerning your teeth, practice good oral hygiene, and schedule regular cleanings. ## What should I know before I get a veneer?

Veneers are a commitment. The American Dental Association lists several points. Treatment is not reversible because enamel is removed. Any decay or gum disease must be treated first. A veneer may chip, crack, wear down or loosen over time and need repair or replacement. If you clench or grind your teeth, or have a deep overbite, veneers may not be a good choice.

You can still get cavities under or around a veneer, so brushing and flossing still matter. Your dentist can talk through each point for your teeth.

See [dental veneers](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-veneers) and the [veneers versus bonding guide](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/guides/veneers-vs-bonding). Write down your questions before the visit. Your dentist will talk with you about what to expect and explain each step before it starts. If you are unsure, call (636) 273-5866. The team can answer questions and help you book a visit. The office is open Monday to Thursday.

## Why does it matter who places veneers?

The American Dental Association urges the public to seek care from licensed dentists. It warns about services from unlicensed people, which may carry risks of infection and nerve damage, and which can place veneers over unhealthy teeth. A licensed dentist diagnoses first and then treats.

If you are comparing offers, check the license. You can verify a Missouri dentist through the state; see our post on [how to check a Missouri dentist's license](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/blog/how-to-check-a-missouri-dentists-license).

Ask who will place your veneers, what the plan includes, and what happens if one chips. Every mouth is different. After your exam, your dentist explains how this applies to you and what your choices are. The office does not publish fees. The team looks at your plan and your treatment, then gives you an estimate for your own case.

## Should I choose a veneer, bonding or a crown?

It depends on the goal. Bonding is often used for small changes and may remove little or no enamel. Veneers cover the front of the tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth, and is more often used when a tooth is weak or damaged.

Your dentist can compare them for your teeth. Read about [dental bonding](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/services/dental-bonding) and [dental crowns](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/services/dental-crown), then ask questions. If you grind, ask about a [night guard](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/services/night-guards) to protect your work.

Cosmetic work may not be covered by insurance, as the ADA notes, so ask the office to check your plan first. Keep your follow-up visits. They let your dentist check how things are going and answer new questions. You can also request an appointment online. Tell the team what you want to talk about so they can plan your visit.

## Questions about dental veneers

[Read the guideVeneers vs Bonding vs Crowns: Which Option Fits Chips, Gaps, and Stains?](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/guides/veneers-vs-bonding)

### What are the pros and cons of composite bonding versus veneers?

Bonding usually removes little enamel and is often done in one visit, but it stains and wears more. Porcelain veneers are strong and long-lasting but remove enamel and cannot be undone. Your dentist helps you weigh them.

### Are veneers reversible?

No. The American Dental Association says treatment is not reversible because tooth enamel is removed to place a veneer. Ask your dentist how much would be removed for your teeth. Your dentist can explain more at your visit.

### Can I get veneers if I grind my teeth?

Maybe, but it needs a plan. The American Dental Association says veneers may not be a good choice if you clench or grind. Your dentist may suggest a night guard or a different option. Ask your dentist what applies to you.

### Will insurance cover veneers?

Usually not. The American Dental Association says veneers are considered cosmetic, so they may not be covered unless deemed medically necessary. The office checks your plan and gives you an estimate. Call (636) 273-5866 with questions.

### How do I care for veneers?

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily. Avoid biting nails and chewing hard objects, and wear a mouthguard for sports. Be careful with coffee, tea and red wine, which can stain.
