Teeth whitening
Teeth whitening uses a bleaching agent to make teeth lighter. It can lighten many stains, but it does not work on every tooth or on dental work.
Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the color less concentrated and your teeth brighter.
Whitening does not work on all teeth. Yellow teeth will probably bleach well, brown teeth may not respond as well, and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all. It will not work on caps, veneers, crowns or fillings. Some people who use whiteners may have tooth sensitivity, and in most cases it is temporary.
Before you whiten, talk with your dentist. Staining can have different causes, including tooth discoloration from inside the tooth. Look for products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Our office describes whitening on its teeth whitening page. See also veneers and bonding.
