# Radiation dose

Radiation dose is the amount of X-ray energy the body absorbs during imaging. Dental X-rays give low doses, and dentists aim to use no more than they need.

Every X-ray uses a small amount of radiation. The ADA says dental X-rays emit very low doses, so the chance of harm is very small. Doses are much lower now than in the past because of better technology. Even so, ADA experts recommend X-rays in moderation.

The FDA asks dentists to follow a rule of using the lowest dose that gives an image good enough to diagnose. The FDA also says dental [CBCT](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/cbct-cone-beam-ct) exams typically deliver more radiation than conventional dental X-rays, so they should be used only when needed. Children are more sensitive to radiation.

Your dentist decides on images by your age, oral health, and risk. Ask why an image is needed. See [digital X-ray](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/digital-x-ray) and [bitewing X-ray](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/bitewing-x-ray).
