# Periodontitis

Periodontitis is advanced gum disease. It damages the tissue and bone that hold teeth in place and can cause deep pockets and loose teeth.

Periodontitis is inflammation of the tissues that support the teeth. It follows untreated [gingivitis](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/gingivitis). The harm is deeper. The body's response to bacteria can break down the gum attachment and the [alveolar bone](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/alveolar-bone). Gaps called [periodontal pockets](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/periodontal-pocket) form between the teeth and gums.

Signs can include gums that bleed easily, red or swollen gums, gums that pull away from the teeth, persistent bad breath and teeth that feel loose. Smoking and diabetes are among the factors that raise the risk.

A dentist measures the pockets and takes x-rays to check bone. Treatment often begins with a deep cleaning, called scaling and root planing. Our office describes gum care on its [periodontal care page](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/services/periodontal-care).
