# Maryland bridge

A Maryland bridge is a bridge that replaces a missing tooth with a false tooth held by thin metal or ceramic wings bonded to the backs of nearby teeth.

A traditional bridge requires crowns on the teeth beside the gap. A Maryland bridge avoids that. Cleveland Clinic says a Maryland bridge, also called a resin-bonded bridge, uses metal wings instead of crowns to secure your bridge. A dentist bonds the wings to the backs of the neighboring teeth with strong resin. This usually means the dentist removes little tooth structure. Maryland bridges are most often used for front teeth, where chewing force is lighter. The wings can come loose, and the bridge may need to be re-bonded. Your dentist will talk with you about whether it fits your bite and your teeth.
