# Facial swelling from a tooth

Facial swelling from a tooth is swelling of the face or jaw caused by a tooth infection. Spreading swelling or trouble breathing needs 911.

A tooth abscess is an infection that can cause swelling. Cleveland Clinic says that left untreated, the infection could cause swelling of your face or jaw, or possibly spread to other parts of your body. Pain, fever, and a bad taste can come with it. See a dentist as soon as possible.

Some signs mean an emergency. MedlinePlus says to go to the emergency room or contact the local emergency number (such as 911) right away for a mouth floor infection with swelling. Call 911 or go to an emergency room if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling that spreads toward your eye or neck, or a high fever with tooth pain.

Do not wait for an office to open if these happen. See [dental abscess](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-abscess) and [dental emergency](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-emergency). For milder swelling, call the dentist. See [emergency dentistry](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/services/emergency-dentistry).
