# Dental crown

A dental crown is a cap that fits over a whole tooth. It restores a tooth's shape and strength and protects it.

A dental crown is sometimes called a cap. It fits over your entire tooth. To place a crown, your dentist must remove some of your natural tooth enamel. They shape the tooth, then place the crown over it.

According to the ADA, a crown can make a tooth stronger and improve its appearance. It can help strengthen a tooth with a large filling when there is not enough tooth left to hold the filling. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges, protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that is already broken.

Crowns can be made from different materials, such as porcelain or metal. See [porcelain](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/porcelain) and [temporary crown](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/temporary-crown). Not to be confused with the [anatomical crown](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/anatomical-crown), the part of the tooth you see. Our office describes crowns on its [dental crown page](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/services/dental-crown).
