# Composite resin

Composite resin is a tooth-colored mix of plastic and fine glass particles that dentists use to fill cavities, repair chips, and reshape teeth.

Composite resin is placed in soft layers and then hardened with a blue light. Because it bonds to the tooth, a dentist can often remove less healthy tooth than with some other fillings. It can be matched to your tooth color. The ADA says composites, or tooth-colored fillings, give good durability and resistance to fracture in small to mid-size fillings that need to withstand moderate chewing pressure. Composite may wear faster than some other materials in large areas, and it takes more time to place.
