Bonding agent

A bonding agent is a thin liquid adhesive that helps tooth-colored fillings and other restorations stick firmly to enamel and dentin.

A bonding agent works like a primer and glue in one. The dentist cleans and conditions the tooth, brushes on the liquid, and hardens it with a blue light. The next layer, such as composite resin, then bonds to the tooth through it. A review in the NIH library says the use of adhesive materials has begun to revolutionize many areas of restorative and preventive dentistry. Bonding agents are used for fillings, dental bonding, veneers, and repairs. They need a clean, dry tooth to work well. Your dentist will talk with you about what fits. See enamel and dentin, or our dental bonding page.
