# Missouri School Entry Rules and Where Dental Visits Fit

Missouri's 2026-2027 school requirements list vaccine doses by grade and do not list a dental exam. The state's school health manual only recommends that schools urge a dental check-up before a child first starts school. A dental visit is your choice, so plan it with your child's dentist.

## Does Missouri require a dental exam to start school?

We did not find one. Missouri’s school entry rules center on vaccines. The Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) says the page lists “required immunizations for students enrolled in and attending schools in Missouri.” Its 2026-2027 requirements document is a grid of vaccine doses by grade, and it does not mention dental care. This is as of October 2026, and rules change, so check the DHSS page and your school.

A dental visit is still a good idea. It is a recommendation, not a state rule. Families near Wildwood, MO who want a dental plan for school should treat it as their own choice.

## What does Missouri actually require?

The requirements document says that “all students must present documentation of up-to-date immunization status, including month, day, and year of each immunization before attending school.” Religious and medical exemption forms are allowed. A child who has started a vaccine series can stay in school with an “in progress” form on file.

## Where do dental visits fit, then?

The state’s Manual for School Health Programs gives the clearest guidance. It says “schools should recommend that students have a comprehensive health examination and dental check-up prior to starting school for the first time.” That is a recommendation to families.

The same manual covers school screenings. It says that “as time and resources permit,” schools should “screen students in grades K-7 who do not report routine professional care, using a visual inspection of the mouth with light and tongue blade.” It adds that any mass screening must have parent notice with an opt-out option. A quick look at school is not the same as a full [dental exam](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-exam) with your dentist.

## When should my child see the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry says the “dental home should be established no later than 12 months of age.” A [dental home](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-home) is the ongoing relationship between a child and a dentist. If your child is already in school, a good time is now, before a toothache forces the visit.

Here is a simple plan for a school-age child:

1. Book a checkup and cleaning before the school year starts.
2. Ask the dentist about [dental sealants](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-sealant) for back teeth and about fluoride.
3. Keep a copy of any dental record the school or a sports team asks for.
4. Plan the next visit before you leave, so the schedule does not slip.

## What happens if a school screens my child’s mouth?

Schools that run a screening must tell parents first. The state manual says “any mass screenings must have parent notification with an opt out option.” The screener looks at the mouth and may send a note home if something needs a dentist’s attention. The note is not a diagnosis. It tells you to book a visit.

If your child gets a note, call a dental office soon and bring the note along. Your dentist will examine your child and talk with you about what to expect. A note does not mean your child has a problem, and a clear screening does not replace regular checkups. Many cavities are small and hard to see with a light and a tongue blade.

## What should I do if the school sends a dental form?

Read it first. Some schools or programs send their own forms. Those are the school’s rules, not the state’s. Ask the school office what it needs and by when. Bring the form to the visit if your child’s dentist needs to fill it in. Keep a copy for your own records, because moving between schools or districts often means filling it out again.
