## Does MO HealthNet cover adult dental care?

Only in a limited way. The MO HealthNet Division, the part of Missouri’s Department of Social Services that runs Missouri Medicaid, says on its dental page: “Coverage for adults is limited and includes dental services and care related to trauma of the mouth, jaw, teeth, or other contiguous sites.” This is as of October 2026. The page is written for dental providers, and rules change, so confirm details with MO HealthNet before you rely on them.

This post explains the state program in general terms. It does not say which plans our office accepts. Call the office to ask about your own plan.

## Who gets full dental coverage?

The same page says MO HealthNet “currently offers comprehensive dental services for children, pregnant women, the blind, and residents of a nursing facility.” Adults outside those groups fall under the limited rule.

Group named on the MO HealthNet page

Dental coverage the page describes

Children

Comprehensive dental services

Pregnant women

Comprehensive dental services

The blind

Residents of a nursing facility

Other adults

Limited: dental services and care related to trauma of the mouth, jaw, teeth, or other contiguous sites

The page does not explain how a person qualifies for each group. It also does not define “trauma.” Ask MO HealthNet or your health plan.

## What does “limited” and “trauma” mean in plain words?

Trauma means an injury. An injury to the mouth, jaw or teeth might come from a fall, a hit in a sport or an accident. Care for that kind of injury is what the page describes for adults. The page does not list routine cleanings, fillings or dentures for adults, and we cannot tell you whether a service is covered.

If you hurt a tooth in an accident, read our guide on [dental emergencies](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/guides/dental-emergency-guide) first. Then call your dentist or an emergency room, depending on the day and how serious the injury is. Our office is closed Friday to Sunday.

## How do I check what my plan covers?

Follow these steps:

1. Find your MO HealthNet member card or your health plan name.
2. Call the number on the card and ask what dental services your coverage includes.
3. Ask whether a dental office is in your plan’s network. A [dentist in your network](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/in-network-dentist) has an agreement with your plan.
4. Ask the dental office whether it accepts your plan before you book. We do not say here which plans our office accepts.
5. Ask for a written estimate and plan details before treatment starts.

The MO HealthNet dental page lists resources such as benefit tables and fee schedules for providers. Ask your plan how to see the details that apply to you.

## What should I ask before treatment?

Coverage questions are easier before a visit than after a bill. Ask these:

- Is this service covered for me, and under which rule?
- Do I need approval from the plan before treatment starts?
- What will I owe if the plan does not cover part of it?
- Is there a limit on how often the plan pays for this service?

A dental office can often tell you the treatment code and the office’s own estimate. Our office gives each patient its own estimate. We do not publish fees, and we do not guess what a plan will pay. Only the plan can say that.

If you have a child on MO HealthNet, the page says children have comprehensive dental services. A regular [dental exam](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-exam) is how children get care before small problems grow.

## What are my options if I am an adult without full coverage?

You still have choices. Other pages cover them:

- [Low-cost dental care in St. Louis County](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/blog/free-and-low-cost-dental-care-in-st-louis-county) lists school clinics and programs.
- [Donated dental care through Dental Lifeline Network](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/blog/dental-lifeline-network-in-missouri-donated-dental-care) explains one program for people who meet its rules.
- [Dental care for seniors in St. Louis County](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/blog/dental-care-for-seniors-in-st-louis-county) covers Medicare and nursing facility coverage.

For a short explainer of the term, see [MO HealthNet dental coverage](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/mo-healthnet-missouri-medicaid-dental) in our glossary, and read about [dental insurance](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dental-insurance) in general.
