When is a weekend dental problem a 911 or emergency room visit?
Go to an emergency room or call 911 for signs of a spreading infection or a severe injury. Cleveland Clinic says to “call 911 or go to your local emergency room” for difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe pain that is getting worse, or swelling around your neck or under your jaw. Do not wait for the office to open.
| What is happening | Where to go on a weekend |
|---|---|
| Trouble breathing or swallowing | Call 911 or go to an emergency room |
| Swelling around the neck or under the jaw | Call 911 or go to an emergency room |
| Severe pain that keeps getting worse | Emergency room |
| Heavy bleeding or a head injury | Call 911 or go to an emergency room |
| Knocked-out adult tooth | Emergency room, after the first-aid steps below |
| Dull toothache, no swelling, no trouble breathing | Home steps, then call the office on Monday |

Which emergency rooms and urgent care centers are nearby?
We did not find an emergency room inside Wildwood. One example is the Emergency Room at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, 12634 Olive Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63141, lists itself as open 24 hours, and says its “Emergency Department staff are available 24/7.” By our route estimate, with no live traffic, it is about 25 minutes by car from our office. Other hospitals in the area may have emergency departments too. Check each one’s own page, and call ahead if you can.
St. Luke’s Urgent Care Center - Ellisville, at 233 Clarkson Rd., Ellisville, MO 63011, has its own page. That page says its centers treat “minor medical emergencies” and lists problems such as cold and flu symptoms, sprains, cuts and rashes. Dental problems are not on that list. It also says “hours may vary as needed,” so call first.
Urgent care is not the same as a dentist. An ER treats medical emergencies and can tell you what to do next. Your dentist handles the dental part when the office is open.
What can I do at home until Monday?
Use only the simple steps that ADA MouthHealthy lists. These do not replace a visit.
- Toothache: rinse the mouth with warm water and gently floss out trapped food. The ADA says, “Do not put aspirin on the aching tooth or gum tissues.”
- Cracked tooth: rinse with warm water, and put a cold compress on the face to keep swelling down.
- Bitten tongue or lip: clean the area gently with water and use a cold compress.
- Knocked-out adult tooth: keep it moist, place it back in the socket if you can, and go to an ER. See our post on the first 30 minutes.

What should I do on Monday?
Call the office when it opens at 8am. Say what happened, when it began and what you did at home. Tell the team about any ER visit and bring the paperwork. If an ER or urgent care gave you medicine, tell the dental team the name. Your dentist will talk with you about what to expect and what comes next. We cannot promise a time slot, so call as soon as the office opens.

What if a tooth is knocked out on a Saturday?
Keep the adult tooth moist and, if you can, place it back in the socket without touching the root. If not, keep it in milk or between the cheek and gums. Go to an emergency room, since the office is closed.
