## Does Medicare cover dental care for seniors?

In most cases, no. Medicare.gov says, “In most cases, Medicare doesn’t cover dental services like routine cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions (removals), or items like dentures and implants.” It adds, “You pay all costs for non-covered services, including most dental services.” This is as of October 2026, and Medicare rules change each year, so read the Medicare.gov page and your plan documents.

The page says Medicare may cover some dental services in narrow cases. Examples are services during a hospital stay, and services tied to certain covered treatments, such as an oral exam before a heart valve replacement. Ask your plan whether your situation fits.

Some people also look at a [Medicare Advantage](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/medicare-advantage-dental) plan for dental benefits. Ask the plan what it covers.

## What dental problems come up as we age?

ADA MouthHealthy says: “As we get older, we enter a second round of cavity prone years.” It names dry mouth as a common cause, and says dry mouth is “not a normal part of aging.” The page says dry mouth is a side effect of more than 500 medications, including some for allergies, asthma and blood pressure. Your dentist may apply a fluoride gel or varnish to help protect teeth from cavities.

Tell your dentist and your doctor which medicines you take. Do not stop any medicine on your own. Our glossary entries on [dry mouth](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/dry-mouth-xerostomia) and [root decay](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/root-decay) explain the terms.

## What should I bring to a first visit?

Bring a list so the visit goes smoothly:

1. Every medicine and supplement you take, with doses.
2. Your medical conditions and the names of your doctors.
3. Any dentures, partials or night guards you use.
4. Your insurance or plan cards, including Medicare and any dental plan.
5. A list of questions, and a family member if you want help remembering.

If you have trouble getting to the office, tell the team when you call. They can talk with you about scheduling.

## How can I stretch dental dollars if coverage is thin?

Prevention costs less than repair, so regular exams matter. A checkup can find a small cavity before it needs a larger repair. Ask your dentist about the order of any work, and what can wait. A written [treatment plan](https://towncenterdental.multisites.ai/glossary/treatment-plan) lists each step, so you can ask each program what it will cover.

If you wear dentures, ask whether yours need a check. Loose dentures can make eating hard. Our office has a page on denture repair. Call the office before you try a fix at home.

## How can a family member help?

Ask your loved one about pain, chewing and dry mouth. Help with a daily brushing routine if hands or eyesight make it hard. If the person lives in a nursing facility, the facility’s staff can tell you what dental care is available and how it is billed. For MO HealthNet, ask the facility’s caseworker.

Our office has pages for senior dentistry and senior dental checkups. We do not say here which insurance plans the office accepts. Ask when you call, and ask for a written estimate. The office gives each patient its own estimate.
